How safe is laser eye surgery?

What risks are associated with laser eye surgery?
As with any medical procedure, certain risks cannot be completely excluded.
More common temporary side effects include dry eyes, increased light sensitivity or halos and glare – especially at night.
These usually subside on their own within the first weeks.
Serious complications such as infections or undercorrection/overcorrection are very rare.
With careful diagnostics, modern laser technology and precise treatment planning, these risks can be significantly minimized.

Does health insurance cover the costs?
In general, basic insurance does not cover laser eye surgery, as it is classified as an elective or comfort treatment.
Some supplemental insurances contribute with payments or lump sums.

Only in rare medical exceptional cases – for example, a very large difference in refractive error between the two eyes – may coverage be considered.
