Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

Age-related macular degeneration refers to a change in the retinal centre (macula). AMD is a common cause for severe visual impairment in patients over the age of 45. It is the most common ailment of the central retina. There is a dry and a damp form.

Macular degeneration appears as a decline of visual acuity, reading capability and occurrence of visual distortions (metamorphopsy).

If the disease is progressed, there is a grey spot in the visual centre, leaving the outer visual field in tact. However, full blindness is not immanent. Diversified risk factors and genetic factors play an important roll in the degree of the ailment.
