Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes is a metabolic disease, in which blood sugar levels are elevated. Badly regulated diabetes can lead to retinal degeneration (diabetic retinopathy). This degeneration is characterised by smaller and larger haemorrhages that can lead to impaired vision. Diabetic retinopathy is a common cause of blindness. The better the individual blood sugar level is regulated (HBA1c), the lower the risk of impairments. This is why we recommend yearly follow-up check-ups with your ophthalmologist.

Preventive medicine sees to it that the patient, diabetologist, dietician,
family physician and ophthalmologist work together.

Prognosis

A prognosis depends on the course of the disease and can fall anywhere between very good to blindness.
